Why choose a career in the Cleantech sector?

Posted on 15 August 2022

It is no secret that the cleantech sector is an exciting one to be a part of. In the UK, we now have a deadline to drastically cut down our carbon emissions. With new companies, technology and ideas popping up across the world that can provide a better tomorrow, who wouldn’t want to be involved?

However, there is also a huge amount of information out there and it can be difficult to know where to start. We are often asked why we set up Zero Global and why cleantech; so we have broken it down into three main areas;

A progressive career:

There is a wide range of exciting technology to get involved in within the cleantech sector. From companies working to create clean, ‘infinite’ power via Fusion technology; to companies in Agritech, creating food vertically to help feed the ever-growing population and cope with the reduction in available land to farm on.

You can have the opportunity to literally work on technology that has never been done before. As a planet, we need to get better in order to eradicate carbon emissions. We need to recycle/repurpose more, use energy more efficiently, manufacture cleaner and travel greener to name a few.

With global government and VC funding/backing on a continued trajectory, a reported £301 billion in the last decade alone and a 27% growth, it’s no surprise companies are continuing to thrive and be allowed to develop creatively.

You will have the chance to push yourself professionally and work on groundbreaking technology.

A career with purpose:

A recent article by Forbes rated that employees feel at their most empowered when they are working towards a greater purpose. What greater purpose is there than saving the planet? Working towards a brighter, more sustainable future is a purpose we can all get on board with.

It is not just experienced workers either; according to the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET), over two-thirds (68%) of children today, hope to have a career that helps the environment.

A career with opportunity:

Finally, According to an ILO report, the cleantech economy will create 24 million new jobs by 2030. This will enable millions of people to overcome poverty and enjoy improved livelihoods. There is already a supply-demand with skilled workers, too many jobs and not enough candidates. So transferrable skills are vital in the cleantech sector. Particularly when you are working on technology that doesn’t exist yet.

In England, the Local Government Association has predicted that by 2030 there could be 694,000 jobs in the low-carbon and renewable energy economy — up from 185,000 in 2018. In 2020 it was also announced that businesses across the UK are set to benefit from a £134 million boost to develop clean technologies and create green jobs. Green industries are already major global employers: the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reports there are currently 11.5 million jobs in the sector.

So not only will you be working in a technically progressive industry with real purpose, but you will also have plenty of opportunities to progress.

If you are trying to build a team within the cleantech sector, we appreciate your task and can help. If you are looking to transfer your skills to operate within the clean sector, we know it’s exciting and all about getting your profile in front of the right people; we are here to help.
