About the Job –
As Design Manager, you’ll have senior-level, hands-on role responsibility for managing the full post-sale design lifecycle across renewable and building services projects including Heat Pumps, Solar PV, MVHR and broader M&E systems.
The successful individual will lead a small team of junior designers whilst acting as the technical authority for installation teams, ensuring designs are detailed, practical and deliverable with minimal on-site issues.
You’ll also work closely with senior leadership to improve workflows, implement BIM processes and support the continued growth of the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor and manage a team of junior design engineers
- Review and approve technical outputs to ensure high design standards
- Take ownership of projects following technical sales handover
- Produce detailed Stage 4 and Stage 5 renewable and M&E system designs
- Design Heat Pump, Solar PV, MVHR and full building services solutions
- Carry out heat loss/gain calculations and room-by-room sizing analysis
- Produce schematics, specifications and technical documentation
- Manage design workflows, project priorities and SLA delivery
- Support installation and site teams with technical queries and problem solving
- Lead client interactions across D&E projects from scoping through delivery
- Implement and manage BIM processes aligned to RIBA stages
- Work closely with senior leadership on continuous improvement initiatives
- Proven experience designing renewable energy systems, particularly Heat Pumps
- Strong building services or M&E design background
- Experience managing or mentoring junior design engineers
- Comfortable leading technical discussions with architects, consultants and clients
- Strong understanding of BIM processes and RIBA design stages
- Proficient with AutoCAD, Revit and other relevant design software
- Strong understanding of UK building regulations and renewable energy standards
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Highly detail-oriented with a focus on reducing installation issues and project snags
